Alone in the Dark

"That show was really scary!" exclaimed John as we walked out of the cinema. "I agree!" Tom replied. " Well..... Time to go home. Bye guys!" I said. They waved me goodbye before we went our separate ways. Now, I was all alone. The bustling atmosphere soon became that of a ghost town. A chilly breeze brushed across my face. It was past midnight and I had to walk a long way in order to reach my house. I decided to take the short-cut. The dark alley was quiet and deserted. A voice echoed down the street.

All of a sudden, I heard footsteps behind me. I looked back over my shoulder, half prepared to see a person or an animal behind me. But instead, I saw nothing. I turned back, muttering to myself that I was just imagining things. Once I turned back, the footsteps sounded again. I ignored the footsteps and continued down the street. The footsteps quickened and became louder. Flustered, I look around. I quickened my steps and covered my ears. From the corner of my eye, I saw a shadow behind the door. A shrill scream pierced through the air.
My eyes widened with fear.

A shudder swept down the length of my spine sending goosebumps to break out like an infection across my body. I shrieked and buried my face in my hands. I could feel my air stand on end as I froze in fright. "Boo!" the
figure shouted. I screamed at the top of my lungs. The figure rolled on the floor laughing.

"John! How dare you scare me!" John stood up and said, "I had forgotten to give you back your handphone after the movie." I snatched it back and stalked off. John did not realise I was angry and shouted his goodbyes. I sighed to myself, wondering why had I have a friend like this. I continued my way home, keeping a lookout for more figures. I will never forget that incident. I never will......

“What a scary movie!” Jerry said. My friends and I just watched a horror movie and it ended at 10pm. We were all talking about that horror movie. “I am going home, bye!”Jerry said. After that, we split up. I headed home and decided to cut through a dark alley to save time.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me. “Who’s there?” I asked in a nervous whisper. A frisson of fear gripped me and I gnawed on my lower lip. All I could see were the shadow of the tall trees that lined the deserted street. Feeling unnerved, I resumed my walk. However, the minute I started walking, the footsteps started again! I quickened my pace, and the footsteps got faster as well. My pulse raced as my imagination ran wild. Was a masked murderer stalking me? I started to run, but the footsteps pursued me relentlessly. There was a food centre up ahead, I decided to seek safety there.
The food centre was well lit and more importantly, it was still quite packed. The stalker would not dare to try anything there. I took a few steps forward, confident that I had shaken off the unwanted attention. To my horror, the mysterious footsteps still echoed behind me. I decided to face my fears. “Show yourself!” I demanded. The people around me looked around in alarm.
In that ensuing silence, a little boy cracked it. “Mum, look at that girl’s shoes,” he began. “It’s torn!” I looked down and a sense of dread swept over me. True enough, the sole of my right shoe had come off. It was I who was making that mysterious footsteps all this while. I smiled embarrassingly and apologised to the people there. My face turned as red as a tomato. I wished the ground will crack open and swallow me up.
I resolved never to let panic rule my actions in future. Never again, I will let my imagination run wild.
